Stanford White’s Ruins
Suzannah Lessard’s 1996 profile of her great-grandfather Stanford White, the architect who designed Madison Square Garden and the Washington Square Arch and who was murdered in 1906.
On her grandfather, Stanford White's only child: "My grandfather was elegant, even in his overalls and an old, crumpled hat—a tall man, a robust man, yet one girded in an armor of privilege and cultivation, through which little evidence of a life of feeling escaped. 'Locked up tight like a safe,' as my grandmother put it."
