Hellhole
Atul Gawande asks, If prolonged isolation is so objectively horrifying, how did we end up with a prison system that subjects so many people to it?
Harry Harlow gave baby monkeys artificial mothers—one made of terry cloth, one of wire. They became deeply attached to the cloth mother. They ran to it when frightened. If sharp spikes thrust from its body, they waited patiently and returned to clutching it. Still they remained psychologically abnormal. Nothing replaces the real thing.
