James Wood writes that George Orwell, a Puritan radical who deplored poverty but detested privilege even more, yearned for an uncorrupted, pre-modern England.
"The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing-fields of Eton, but the opening battles of all subsequent wars have been lost there." Orwell's war cry: "England is the most class-ridden country under the sun. A family with the wrong members in control." Revolution was not just desirable but necessary.
