Blue Roses
Short story about an Asian-American woman and her contentious relationships with her grown children and with her friend, an ailing widow.
"I've waited your whole life for you to invite me to dinner," Yiyun Li's narrator tells her daughter. "Now you want to take it back?" What had her children ever done for her? When they were babies, she chewed their food before putting it in their mouths. Her purse must have weighed twenty pounds.
