Assimilation
Short story about a dishwasher whose boss asks him to enter into a green-card marriage.
The bearded heavyset fellow held the girl's elbow. She seemed fearful. A drunk city functionary married them, mumbling, swaying, nearly knocking over the lectern. Edwidge Danticat's Ramon had sold his birth certificate for three thousand dollars. The girl from the photograph gave him a quick glance and nodded. No smile.
