In Egypt's first freely elected parliament in six decades, Peter Hessler found Rifaat the shoeshine man defiant about his confrontation with Ahmed Ezz, the powerful N.D.P. figure now serving ten years for corruption: "I said, 'I don't care. I'm not afraid of you.'" He waved a finger as if Ezz were still standing before him.
